I'm wondering about doing this ride (route) in a single shot or a double shot. Anyone have some details on mileage for the whole route and/or mileage from mountains to triangle, and from triangle to the sea?
If you referring to the CNC Fall Ride. It around 400 to 450 miles over seven days. There is at least one day during the week for a century.
The CNC Spring Retreat is a 3 Day ride. Unlike the fall ride we make loop rides out of a host town every day. These rides range from 6 miles to 65 and 100 miles. On somedays you will have several routes to choose.
Don’t let the fall ride distance fool you it is down hill. Mountain to the Coast is the name of the ride.It goes from up there to down there. Most years there are a much as a 5000 foot drop, all down hill.
A better discription of the ride would be that there is a (8-12 mile downhill)(Drop of about 2000 to 2500 feet) on day one. This gets you from the NC mountians to the foothills. Then two to three days of rilling hills, it depends on where the start is but these days can be small rollers or steep short 1-2 mile climbs all day long. Then just when your BUTT gets red, it gets flat and you sit down all day.
To answer your original question, the NC DOT Bicyle and Pedestrian Division has maps and information that can route you from anyplace in the west to about anyplace in the east of NC. The can keep you off the main roads, but off course you would have no support.
Post or reply to one of the Polka Dots. Those guys are always riding someplace self contained. They can help you for sure.
Yes, A few of us DOTs are going on a four day self contained loop ride of the outer banks after the Spring retreat. Lake Mattamuskeet, three light houses( Ocracoke,Hatteras and Body Island) and a 2-1/2 hour ferry ride across the Pamlico Sound are on our list of things two see and do. For Info on the bicycling Highways of NC call 1-919-733-2804 or 1-800-visitnc. Some nice folks there will be glad to help you out.
I think officially last year it was about 200 miles to Burlington which is just west of what I would consider the Triangle, and 268 miles to Holly Springs which I would say is just east of the Triangle. From Holly Springs, it was less than 200 miles to the coast. They usually have an option to ride for 3 or 4 days I think. The route changes every year, so mileage varies.
I can also tell you that it isn't all downhill. This past year, most of the first day was spent descending then climbing. It was only near the end of the first day that there was a 6.5 mile descend. I did just fine with granny gear though. After the 3rd day, your butt will require attention, but your legs will be ready to carry you indefinitely.
