do you need a lock?

I have been on a couple of cycling tours, which usually go through small towns in Michigan.  Although I have brought a lock, I've never really found it necessary.

Same story in NC?

Nick,

I carry one with me and find that I seldom use it. But when I do, I'm glad I have it.

Sometimes the host facility will not permit bikes in the gym, or the camp is in a challenged neighborhood. In those circumstances, I lock her up cause she's so sweet to me. I always take care of my bike.

I always carry a small Kryptonite cable lock on cycle tours.  It gives me peace of mind if nothing else.  Occasionally bikes do get stolen on tours, although it's rare.  Since I don't have a car, I often use my bike to cycle around towns, pick up supplies or go out to eat.  It's comforting to me knowing that my bike is locked up, and the weight of the small cable lock is neglible unless you are a weight-weenie.  Just don't forget the combination to the lock!

I have been on all five CNC rides and two BRAGs. As noted by others, I have seldom felt the need for a lock, and am not aware of any bike thefts from CNC, BUT...there have been occasions when I was very glad I had one.   Sometimes it is a stop at a museum or resturant in a town during the day.  At others, it is a less protected camping location. The lock isn't much extra trouble when weighed against the potential loss, no matter how small, of ones only transportation several hundred miles from home.

I carry an extremely light/thin Kryptonite cable lock that weighs very little.  It's not going to deter a bike thief intent on taking my bike, but it will make almost all potential bike thieves pick an easier target (perhaps your bike - if you don't have any lock).
