OH NO!, We hung out at the ferry dock for over 3 hours while the storm past. Then went to plan "B" ( plan "A" Take ferry to Ocracoke from Swan Quarter then go north up the coast. Instead cycled from Swan Quarter to Inglehard with a hefty tail wind. I fact we managed to have a good tail wind during all four days of our ride. One of our best days we managed to do 50 miles in just over 3 hours with fully loaded packs. WOW! was that fun. The only scary part was on day 3 while crossing over one of the long bridges from Manito to the outer banks. The cross winds awful. But once we started our southern route back to Avon and Ocracoke the tail winds returned and we were cooking with gas. It was a great ride.
Please forgive me on my last post. That is what I get for not proof reading it before hitting the submit button. We did have a good time and we never got rained on. Well.... never got soaked. We managed to stay on the tail end of the storm and only got the tail winds. During Day 3 we met two touring cyclists heading north on Hwy 12 fighting our tail winds. They were averaging somewhere around 4 mph. Below is our stats.
15 April 2007 Swain Quarter to Engelhard 26.4 miles, Average speed 13.2 mph 16 April 2007 Engelhard to Manteo.......... 49.7 miles, Average speed 13.0 mph 17 April 2007 Manteo to Avon ................49.2 miles, Average speed 15.6 mph 18 April 2007 Avon to Swan Quarter .......37.2 miles, Average speed 13.0 mph
The Avon to Swan Quarter route has two ferry rides. I think the ferry at Cape Hatterus is about 10 miles long. The Ferry from Ocracoke to Swan Quarter is 27 miles long. These miles are not included in the stats.
Take care of yourself. I hope to see you this fall.
I'll plan to see you in the fall. I'll find out next week what is going on with my knee and if nothing major is going on, I'll go ahead and register for the fall ride.
We had a great ride and met lots of good people in Eastern NC. No problems with traffic, even over the three major bridges. Drivers were polite and the road conditions excellent. We will be posting a summary with maps, road conditions, and contacts on www.crazyguyonabike.com soon.
Basically, it was a scenic 160 mile loop in four days with flat terrain, and done very inexpensively.
See how much fun the Dots have. Remember, if you are not running with the dOGS, stay on the poarch. Good friends, Good riding, Good food & Good beer. Life is GOOD.
