hi. i'll be doing my first cnc and was wondering about which bile to take. choices are bwteen a Scattante R-550 and a Surly Long Haul Trucker.

Scattante R-550: entry level road bike with shimano triple 105 group. aluminum frame. crappy wheelset.

Surly Long Haul Trucker: Steel touring frame, heavier than the Scanttante, utegra triple, all around top of the line true tourer, a more up right riding postition.

i built the surly for future touring; i plan on doing some weekend loaded tours with it over the summer, but haven't as of now. the scattante has been used for weekend 25-40 mile rides.

i'm grateful for any help or suggestions.

thanks.

What bike are you comfortable on? As long as your can ride it for 7 days, it is the correct bike to take. Both bikes have triples, so it is there if you need it. This is a tour, you are permitted to stop as often as you wish, so you will not be on the bike continous, for the entire day. I have used a full-blown touring bike on 5 CNCs. I have used my Dura-Ace bike on 3 RAGBRAI's. No problems on either. bAD dOG

Ha. if i get another bike (have 4 now) my g/f will kick me out of the house. although...

bAD dOG - good points. the surly is very comfy and geared well for touring. i run 700x28 tires on it, so it'll still move when i need it to...esp. unloaded. and anothering thing, i like showing it off

thanks

I prefer more upright riding.  I will use my Trek Pilot with Ultegra triple crank and will do fine.
