Tire Sizes 700x??
Permalink Closed

Has anyone tried different tire sizes to get an impression of wheter it really makes much difference in comfort and effort?  I ride 700X23 in front and 700x25 in back but could go to a 28.  It's not that I experience much discomfort on long rides, just wondering if lowering pressure is as effective as a tire swap.  Also, I notice that more bikes are now coming with 25's.

it is my understanding that using different size tires is not safe. also the lower the air pressure, the better chance of get flats. discomfort especially in the seat area can be improved by using a saddle with more cushion. other disscomfort may be how you are positioned on the bike. have a bike fit done a your local bike shop.

RK,

I think tire size generally isn't a predominant influence on comfort. Comfort is dominated by bike fit, so if you are having comfort issues I'd see my local shop like bk2 suggests.

Most of the load on the bike is carried by the back tire, so it'll wear out much faster than your front tire if they are the same size. I step up one size or so in the back on my hybrid to gain longer tire life for the back tire, and I see no difference in effort or in safety. I run a 700x28 front, and 700x32 back. Works for me, so give it a try if it sounds right to you. Also a good topic to talk to bike shop guys about to gain their perspective.

I've run 700 x 23s on my road bike front and back.
