This is my first CNC ride and I am using the bus sevice. My question is about the transportation of our bikes. I believe I read somewhere that they are loaded on a truck and are protected by cardboard, possibly boxes. I love my bike and like to prevent scratches, etc. so could any of you experienced with the ride tell me if I should take extra precautions to protect my bike in transit?
The best advice I could give to you is that if you don't want you're bike scratched up, crate it up in a bike carrier and arrange to have the carrier shipped back to your home. CNC will carry the crate up for you but will not transport it back. I did my first ride in 2003 and did just this crated it up to Boone via the CNC truck and then shipped it back home FedEx Ground. The only difficulty was finding a FedEx drop location. In subsequent years I've transported my bike up on my own vehicle and just been dropped off.
While the CNC staff takes great care in packing the bikes, there is just no way to prevent incidental damages.
Thank you, Tim. I am taking the bus from Emerald Isle back to Banner Elk after the ride - that is where my car will be located. My bike transport question just concerns it being trucked to Banner Elk and if I need to take extra care. Once I get it back to my car in Banner Elk all will be fine.
Go to your local Lowes store and buy some pipe insulation, it is pre-slit to fit over pipes. Cut to size and mark with a sharpie each section where it belongs. Attach it(insulation) to the frame with electrical tape. You can even wrap your deraileur and brake hoods if you are really picky. Discard at the start or save it to use another time.
