Old Salem Museums and Gardens will hold special classes at Tanglewood on October 2. They will start at 5:00 p.m. and end and 9:00 p.m. The cost of each class is $10.00 and registration must go through Joyce Knabb at jknabb@oldsalem.org.


The classes are:


The Potter of Salem-Making a Molded Piece of Pottery. Pottery was an important part of the economy of early Salem. Learn about Moravian potters and how potters utilized double mold to produce household items from red clay. You will be using a reproduction mold and other tools to make a clay bottle that is shaped like a fish. Pottery will be fired and glazed and shipped to your home address.


Sewing a Leather Portfolio: Salem's tanners produced leather for a variety of goods, from shoes made by the shoemaker to saddles. Utilizing period tools, learn to sew leather and make your own portfolio to take with you.


Two-Peg Coat/Hate Rack: The joiners of Salem made a variety of goods out of wood. You will learn how to make a two-peg coat/ hat rack out of poplar. Hand tools will be necessary. The rack may be stained and finished at home. Shipping is available.
