BIKE INSPECTION

Well, I think it's ridiculous for those of us who take GREAT care of our bikes and I think it's
stupid that we need to keep a copy of the completed form with us at ALL times.

Maybe this will help the REI folks get to bed alittle earlier at night. I am sure they were fixing alot of stuff that should have been caught long before the the CNC ride. This is really not a big deal. I will just take my bike down to my local bike shop. Let them look over my bike. Then have them sign the form and then put the form in a zip lock bag and store with my patch kit. Done.

I agree with Bill. If you were on last years ride you know how long the line was at REI. I believe they are just trying to get us to do our part and have our bikes in good mechanical order before the ride. If something breaks during the ride REI is there to help you get back on the road. They shouldn't be expected to fix problems you had before the ride. I was very impressed with the service REI provided last lear and if this will help them out then I am all for it. It might even save someone from going down the first big hill without any brakes.

32 Days 15 Hours 30 Minutes but who's counting. I've been looking forward to this since the last day of last years ride. I have rode RAGBRAI twice and this is by far the better ride. I didn't know a single person on the ride before I left home but had 6 or 7 new friends before my wheels made one revolition. The atmosphere of the ride is second to none and NC is a beautiful state. See you 30 September!!!

CNC and REI are the best and if you are riding 400+ miles you should have no problem getting your bike checked out before the ride.  And....it's FREE!

If you want to see some REAL equipment inspections, wait till you get to Carolina Sky Sports and strap into a harness with 2 parachutes, 3 handles a back up automatic activation device, ect and yes, they carry the FAA inspection card on the rig in 120 mph wind. No one gets on the plane unless the certified card is up to date too.
Going down a steep hill on a bike at 40 + mph is not all that much different.
Stop whining.

I am totally in favor of the inspection form for all  of the reasons previously mentioned.  I believe that in previous rides, we had to present it at check in. As a compromise to having to keep up with the paper, what if the check-in staff simply wrote a "secret code" on the back of the CNC tag that we have to keep on the bike at all times anyway.  Then when someone takes the bike to the (thank God they're there) REI staff, they can check the back of the tag.  No code, no service!

ride-on!

The nearest bike shop is 40 miles from my town.  I've been riding for 35 years, including several self contained tours up to 5000 miles cross country.  I have done all my own maintenance including relacing a friend's wheel (that had been laced backwards at a bike shop at a "pre tour tune-up") on a picnic table at a campground.  Give me a break.

As mentioned before, MS150 also requires an inspection form. Like many other riders, i do a lot of my own maintenance, but not all of it. Even if i were the expert on keeping my bike in shape, i appreciate having someone else review my work to make sure i caught everything. I'm not that ****y.

Getting the inspection is not worth whining about. I will be switching to an old 12 speed for the second half of the ride, so i will be getting 2 inspections. For those who have difficulty having your bike inspected by another party, by all means, sign the form yourself and try to look for something about the ride that you may find enjoyable.

Okay then dude, good for you. Don't get your bike inspected. No where does it say that the inspection is mandatory for you to ride CNC. From your post above it appears you've never done the CNC before and seen the trash people wheel out of their garage/attic/crawl space and think they're gonna' do 500 miles. I have often seen people's bikes that have obviously had no maintenance what-so-ever in years, and then they come on CNC and wonder why their machine breaks.

I, for one, welcome the inspection as it is no big deal to me. I keep my machine in good working order and always take it in for a once over prior to CNC. While I'm a skilled mechanic I don't bother to carry all the tools I may require and therefore find the REI shop to be an excellent "insurance" policy against unexpected problems. And if one of those arise, do you really want to be stuck in line awaiting repairs behind some goober whose bearings are frozen because they haven't used/maintained their bike for years?

Peace,
TNT

Hi guys, I think you're missing the point of the bike inspection. You don't have to have it done to ride. Just ride. AND since your bike is just like mine and not in bad shape - the mechanics at REI will never know that you did not have your bike inspected. Simple. Rest easy, ride on.

JoeBoy,
The reason your bike is in such great mechanical condition is because it's missing all those troublesome gears and deraileurs!

The bicycle inspection form was intended to create safety awareness among riders during the event and not to create any burden for anyone.  As a result, riders have the choice to keep the inspection form with them during the ride or you can turn in your form at check-in or the CNC HQ RV and the CNC staff will carry your form for the entire week.

CNC 2007 is only one month away so keep training and we will see you in September/October!

Who do we invoice for the LBS cost to conduct this inspection?

Sheesh!  It is chump change if there is any cost.  Repair items may be a different case, though.  Git 'er fixed!
