places to eat - Elkin, Greensboro

Greetings. I went on a training ride over the weekend and stopped by Elkin & Greensboro to get an idea where the food options are.

Downtown Elkin has a few restaurants, but mostly antiques, crafts, or specialty shops. For eating, Main Street has Mom's Restaurant (home style cooking), Royall's Soda Shoppe (hot dogs, burgers, shakes, etc), and Diana's Bookstore & Coffee Shop (not sure what food is available). You can find some of the more traditional offerings (read: there's one in every town in america) on North Bridge Street, plus some more local dining (Mattie's Homestyle Cooking & Seafood, Mazzini's Italian, a mexican, japanese) and others further north. You can also find a Food Lion & a couple of drug stores in case you forgot to pack something. I mapped some of these out here:

I also have some pictures of the recreational center and downtown area at http://www.flickr.com/photos/twbuckner/sets/72157601831289279/

The grounds have lots of greenspace for camping.

In Greensboro, i did not go into Bur-Mil Park, but drove past it going south on 220 (Battleground Avenue). Within the first 2 miles i found a RiteAid Pharmacy, Harris Teeter, Subway, Waffle House, Elizabeth's Pizza, Holy Guacamole Mexican Grill, Food Lion, KFC, Taco Bell, Walmart (i'm sure they have a good price on bikes if yours goes bust :), Quizno's, Wendy's, and some large shopping centers nested away from the road that i didn't have time to look into.

In short, there are plenty of options on Battleground Avenue. However, it is full of traffic, especially on a Monday afternoon. If you venture out, there is safety in numbers.

Anybody know anything about Roanoke Rapids? Edenton?

I am helping the Chamber of Commerce and the Parks Department organize the night stop in Elkin. The Town of Elkin is working hard to ensure that the stay in Elkin will be memorable. Having participated in 7 CNC rides, 3 Goba, 2 Bike Virginia and 1 Canadian (Capitol Tour 1999) I asked to have some imput on the shuttle stops.  There will be 2 separate routes, A and B.  One will go downtown and across the river to the hotels and restaurants in Jonesville and the other will go up N Bridge street.  The runs will be short, maybe 15 minutes or 20 minutes at the most.  Each participate will be given a pamphlet listing the shuttle stops and which restaurants are located near the stops in addition to other information about the shops and happenings in town.  Downtown has an establishment named Snickerdoodles which has coffees, salads, pastries, sandwiches and much more.  There will be several restaurants downtown open for CNC.  Menues will be availble at the welcome tent. The library, which is located less than 1/4 mile from the far end of the park, will open especially in the afternoon for the CNC riders.  There will be a used book sale going on and also there are computers available for personal use.  All the restaurants know that CNC riders will be about town and will be prepared. I think that everyone will enjoy their time in Elkin.
