From what I have been reading lately, the parkway road is still close in places. I am wanting to ride from mile marker 176 (near 421) to Asheville (Mile marker 380 or 390 ). Will I be able to do this? I found the web site for the park way. But I didn't notice when these areas will be repaired. Does any one know? I hope to do this in late spring or early summer.

Gator Dog ...This is your neck of the woods...any news.

Doesn't look too promising for a spring ride in that area. According to info from the Assault on Mitchell people, the section from hwy 80 to Asheville will not be opened probably until Memorial Day. The section around Linville sustained even more damage, so I'm guessing it will be much later before that is opened.

For up to the minute BRP road conditions/closures call (828)298-0398. This is the National Park Service road info line.

Marsha is correct in that it will be a looong time before the Parkway is completely healed. With some careful research, you may be able to divert around the effected areas without adding too many miles...

Yep, major chunk of the BRP is now a few thousand feet lower.  It has caused rerouting of Assault on Mt. Mitchell apparently.  Check with the BRP at the HQ office in Oteen, and ask whether it is open to bikes.  Often, the Parkway will be closed to cars but not bikes.  However, from the photos of the chunk that is missing, it is unlikely it is open to anyone other than construction crews.

You may be able to detour around closed areas by going off the Parkway and into town, then up the next entrance.

As an alternative, you may wish to ride Asheville to Cherokee on the BRP.  Bring some $$ for the slot machines when you get to Cherokee.

See you at the Spring CNC Thing!

Thanks for the info. Maybe I will wait on the parkway ride untill everything is fixed up there. The C&O canal is looking pretty good and so is the Virginia Creeper and New River Trail.

One of the Parkway Rangers came to the school I teach in to do a presentation to the fifth graders. According to him, they really aren't sure how soon that section will be re-opened, but it certainly didn't sound like anytime soon.
