Is the route made up entirely of road travel or are there some greenways and bike paths along the way too? Generally, how busy are the roads with car traffic?
The route consists of paved state roads with relatively low vehicular traffic; however, as you approach the host cities, there will be an increase in traffic. CNC strives to keep us out of as much traffic as possible.
Something everyone needs to be aware of is the rail road tracks on us421 2 miles from the end.The tracks are very very bad, the safest way to cross them is to walk across. A fast pace line will crash. I do not know what the people at CNC can get the DOT to do, but it needs a patch at the least.
The best thing to do is call your local DOT Maintenance Yard. There are some problems with the railroad company in that they own some crossings and will not let the DOT fix the problem. They insist on doing this work themselves, who knows? But give it a try and also let the CNC staff know the night before so they can remember to mark the tracks. If you are a local to the area check with one of the local EMS, Fire Depts, or such they may station someone there for that day. Take care and train hard for the hills on day two and three.
Yeah, I know what you are talking about. We rode over that piece a few years back, and the CNC pace lines are cooking coming into Wilmington. We had a similar terrible rail crossing coming into Kinston at the end of the days ride a few years back, tracks angled wrt the road and a very busy road. There were large gaps between the rails and the adjacent pavement. A CNC volunteer was begging people to get off and walk. Some did, and some didn't ...and many fell.
If the system and the process can't get it fixed, perhaps someone could go out there w a truck load of sand and sweep it into the spaces btwn the rails and the pavement. Doesn't interfere with train traffic, but sure does help road tires...Just a thot...
What condition are the roads generally in? IOW, what size tires do most riders use? Are 700x23s adequate or do you need 25s or 28s to deal with rough roads?
