I'm heading to the Boone/Grandfather Mountain area in a few weeks and want to bring my road bike. I will be staying near the Mast General Store. I'm a novice rider and log about 75-100 miles per week with long rides of about 45 miles from time to time. Does anyone know of any trails that are bicylce/pedestrian only in that area or any particularly safe roads with a bike lane? Not sure how those climbs and thin mountain air are going effect a FL boy.
If you don't want to ride on the parkway you might try the Railroad Grade Road that runs between Fleetwood and Todd. It runs along the south fork of the New River. Out and back is about 20 miles. The scenery is beautiful and the road is flat.
There are many good rides in the Boone area. Two good sources for routes are www.magiccyles.com (the riders forum) and the Blood Sweat and Gears routes posted at www.bloodsweatandgears.org. The Blood Sweat and Gears routes incorporate all the best roads for riding in the area.
We also have evening rides sponsored by the local bike shops, but be forewarned-- these people are amazing at riding in the mountains.
Magic Cycles in Boone now has a ride that starts at 5:30 pm on Wednesdays that would work well for you. 30 miles, good climbing but lots of stops to regroup, little traffic and great scenes. The faster group leaves at 6:00 pm. You'll have a great time - try to make it if you can. Boone Bike and Touring can also hook you up with some good routes. We are lucky to have two great shops here so be sure to drop in both places during your visit.
Get a copy of "Road Cycling the Blue Ridge High Country." 26 routes with maps, cues, and lots of background info. A bunch of them begin and end in Valle Crucis.
