Absolutely, take 3 or 4 days to do the first day's ride and you will not have to worry about seeing CNC staff or bike riders or your camping gear ever again.
If you want a good trainning ride try one of the MS-150 rides. You need to plan on a average
of 65 mile per day. There is no need to panic. If you fine that you just can't make the miles that day flag down a one of the SAG wagons. We'll see you in camp.
In order to have the SAG support and keep up with your gear, you need to follow each day's riding itenerary. Also, there is the "party" atmosphere involved with the ride which you will miss if you don't follow the CNC schedule. For most of us, CNC is a leisurely ride to enjoy the scenery and comaraderie.
The great thing about Cycle North Carolina is that you can do the days mileage at whatever pace you would like. We have skipped all the rest stops and went straight the next camp site. We have also stopped at every stop and little store along the way and arrived in camp with beer strapped to the rear rack(never drink until you get to camp). You can go as fast as you want and SAG anytime you would like. Come and have a great time.
For what it's worth, here is my two cents: As of today, the ride is about 14 weeks away. If you've not been riding in training more than once a week and over distances of 40 miles or greater, you should step up your training. Also, read up on nutrition for riders. Yes, this is a non-competitive event and you should be able to keep pace with an easy group, if you choose. However, you have to be certain your body and your mind are ready for consecutive 60+/- mile days with varying terrain. Ride now with small groups and by yourself. Don't forget hill intervals in your training. You need to be strong on hills so you can finish each day without feeling exhausted. Learn what to eat when you ride (not all foods are enjoyed by all riders). Finally, if you do have to SAG it in, there is no dishonor in that. We've all done it at least once. Good luck!
Each day has a specific start and end point - it's not a free-for-all. There is a specific end town and overnight location each day. The route is only marked for that day's ride, only that day's rest stops are open, and the SAG vehicles only support that day's route. The only option you have is to do the optional century the one day it's offered. (I add a second "do it yourself" century during the week by riding back to earlier rest stops and then forward again.)
