REI has been our sponsor and mechanical support for years and each year, they try their best to provide our riders with everything they might need during the ride. However, there are times where the shop does not have what you need and so they are trying to get ideas from the riders themselves on what you would like to see in the shop. This is your chance to speak up and possibly think of something that the staff from REI might not have thought of. REI needs your input to better supply it’s shop for this years bike ride. They have asked me to send this out to gather comments, suggestions, and recommendations on what you as a CNC rider would like to see at this years CNC ride. Keep in mind that REI will not be able to fulfill all your requests, but they will take into consideration each and every suggestion. Thanks and have a great day!
We will be riding a tandem. Our tandem is a S&S coupled tandem and because it is we already have these cable spliters to help pack the tandem... However if we didn't and we had a problem with a brake/shifter cable we would be stuck because a standard cable is too short.
I prefer the eazy-splitters because they make a splitter for brakes and shifters (they are different sizes due to the cable diameters).
Note that recumbents also need longer cables for the rear brakes and rear d too...
B) A tandem specific rear wheel. While the tandem front wheel tends to be heavier duty too, a 32 spoke front wheel can still make do. However the rear wheel on a tandem has a wider axle than single bikes. Most tandem rear wheels are 145mm but the most popular brand (Santanna) uses a 160mm axle. Yes it is a unique request but hey you asked
Other items to consider... C) Quick release seatpost levers and campy binder bolts in case someone breaks a binder bolt..
D) V brake pads, Canti brake pads....
E) Selection of saddles both men and women, sport/race and comfort.
F) 650C tires and tubes... Because recumbents, esp the new high-wheel bikes use 650 wheels.
G) Various types of pedals and cleats... Look, SPD, Eggbeaters... This past weekend I was on a trip in Wisconsin and a guy had some Speedplays and the cleat broke... Well we were in a camp site and no bike shop around easily and a century ride was the next day... Just so happens I carryed a brand new set of eggbeater-candy pedals... We swapped out his system for these and he used them the next two days. Because I keep them as backups he simply returned them... Glad I had them or he woulda had a hard time because the century had a lot of short steep climbs...
OK... Well that's a start... Because I am driving up I will probably be able to carry most of the odd-ball parts I will need but this should be a good start for all of us (and in case I forget something
Oh... and while I'm at it... Probably bring a hammer/malet and possibly a set of tent stakes and perhaps other camping odds and ends... Flash lights? Oh and perhaps water bottles (I've forgotten those before) and camel backs (for those who forget theirs but prefer them over bottles) and even a few helmets for the truely forgetful.. I'd say shoes but those are too many sizes to carry a complete set...
1. Bring Curtis and friends. Good folks all. Is Scott gonna be there this year?
2. There's all kinda bikes on this tour, mtn to road to hybrid to tandem etc. Bring tubes and tires for them all, plus whatever the top 5 repairs are by frequency for all bikes.
3. REI does a great job of sending stuff to us by shuttle from Cary. Above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you, brother.
4. Beer for the REI mechanics (see #1, all machines work best when properly lubed).
5. Keep the squeaky toys. Gotta have fun while riding.
6. Take Mr Preston's note in small doses, he's waaayyy serious.
The could stock a few inclinometers. There are less than $20 and serve well as a quick gauge of a hill's grade. It is basically a very small carpenter's level designed for cyclists. How about the have a CNC special discount on jerseys, shorts, etc.?
As mentioned, the new high racer recumbents are running mostly 650c wheel sets. Most of these are running 23mm tires on them, I am. So replacement tires would be nice in the case of a blow out ... tubes to go along with of course. Other than that I can't think of anything that I might need that hasn't already been mentioned.
However I'll also support the statements about the WONDERFUl people such as Curtis and Scott from REI and the OUTSTANDING support that they provide to us riders .......... CNC wouldn't be what it is without them !!!!!!
How about tires and tubes for a 27 x 1 1/8 wheel? I'm going to bring an extra tube or two, but tires are kinda difficult to pack, esp. cause I haven't come across a so-called foldable 27 inch tire that I'd like to ride.
