I'm more interested in local "ambiance" rather than the standard meal plan for meals, but I don't want to get stuck not signing up for the meal plan and then end at a remote campsite with little access to any other local meal options, either in the morning or evening. Does anyone know which camping locations will be located at sites which won't have close access to local eating establishments? I'm not necessarily looking for gourmet, just interesting local joints! Thanks much.
This will be my 5th ride of this sort, and in my experience breakfast is the most difficult to find on your own. Usually, we leave so early that everything in the nearest town is closed and then we ride along back roads where we can't find a place to eat. If you do, it's really crowded with all the rest of the bikers.
Supper is easier to go on your own. We're usually camped someplace that's close to plenty of eating establishments and you've got lots of time to find them.
This will be my 4th CNC. Each year I purchase fewer meals than the previous year. Taking the shuttle into town and enjoying the local restaurants with friends new and old is one of the great things about CNC. I find that the camp meals 1) have long lines, 2) have variable quality food (moderate at best), and 3) have long lines that you need to get into early and wait, and 4) inevitably run out of at least some items because despite the best efforts of the CNC organizers to communicate it, some catering groups (often civic organizations) simply do not believe how much food hungry cyclists who've been riding all day can put away.
As for breakfast I purchase Harold's coffee & muffin detail each year. I enjoy good coffee and a variety of danishes and Otis Spunkmeyer muffins. Not high nutrition, but we'll burn it off.
