This will be my first year doing CNC, and I was wondering what people did for food. Is the meal plan worth it, ie. is it good food. I assume there aren't places near by to eat since we're camping. Let me know what has worked for you. I'd appreciate it.
The meal plan lets you choose the individual meals you want. I have taken selected dinners over the years and they were OK. When I did not get the plan, we really did not have too much trouble finding someplace to eat. Sometimes these are within walking distance and sometimes we heard of a really good place that involved taking the shuttle bus.
Look for the Pok-A-Dots. We will take care of you.
The CNC meals are generally good, buy what looks appealing to ya and looks like a good $deal$.
Pros: Generally good, convenient. Breakfasts almost always good (hard to mess up b'fast). Get to meet fellow cyclists, good conversation.
Cons: Caterers underestimate how much cyclists eat, so line up early. Quality can vary. No alcohol served with camp meals.
Camping is sorta a misnomer, we are usually in a rec center or Nat Guard Armory in a small town. Stuff is usually w/i a mile or so, a pleasant walk or short ride. They do have shuttles if you wish to wait. I find it nice to go to town some evenings and talk w locals over a cold one. Who knows, you may run into me or bAD dOG...tilt one with us!
Sounds like good advice so far. I don't eat breakfast myself (just some coffee a powerbar and banana)so I can't speak to that. The lunch I would never do as you can pick up plenty to eat along the ride.
Dinner, I would suggest you look at the town and watch the message board for comments. Normally: Large town, no need for the meal plan as there is always someplace around to eat. Small town, do the meal plan it is most likely the best food in town. I agree that the caterers seem to underestimate just how much people eat after riding 60-70 miles per day.
As noted in other message threads. Breakfast is the only potential food problem. If you want a real one you better buy it in camp. We seldom to never pass a Macs. For a lighter breakfast the muffin available through the coffee detail may suffice. Otherwise, the shuttle, walking, or a short bike ride will get you to food with no problems.
