Don't limit yourself to walking distance!  CNC provides shuttle buses (free) in every town.  The shuttles will drive by areas that have a number of restaurants and the recommended hotels - then back to the campground.  Get out and see and enjoy!

During CNC 2001, my partner and I dined at Pan Dowdy's (Pandoudy's?) in Downtown Mount Airy and it was excellent. Good food and cheap. It was on the shuttle route and was almost within walking distance of the campsite.
